GREENVILLE – Fire crews from across Darke County worked to contain a third alarm barn fire on the outskirts of Greenville.
At approximately 9:10 p.m. Wednesday, emergency personnel from Greenville Township Fire and Rescue were dispatched to a fully involved barn fire located at the end of Wood Avenue just off of Lake View Estates.
Arriving crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure located at 5947 Wood Ave. and immediately requested additional departments. Responding was manpower and equipment from Arcanum Fire, Bradford Fire, Gettysburg Fire, Greenville City Fire, Liberty Township Fire, New Madison Fire, Pitsburg Fire and Versailles Fire departments.
The fire was able to be knocked down and brought under control, however, the structure and its contents were destroyed in the blaze. Multiple small explosions could be heard from the many propane tanks and full fuel tanks on the vehicles stored inside the barn.
According to the owner of the property, Lugene Ignaffo, the barn was used to store vehicles and equipment for Ignaffo Roofing, of which he is the owner and operator of. Also lost in the barn was a travel trailer, a new Harley Davidson motorcycle plus equipment and supplies from his wood shop.
Firefighters from across the county fought the blaze long into the night before crews were able to be slowly released from the scene around midnight.
