UNION CITY, Ind. – The first Union City Lions Club meeting for the month of October was held at the Union City Community Room on Oct. 8. As always, a delicious meal prepared by D’s Restaurant was served to 22 members and three guests.

The program for the evening was presented by Coach Tom Byrum, Union City’s new Varsity Boys Basketball Coach. Byrum graduated from UCCHS and IU East and is in his 27th year of coaching. Byrum started his coaching career at West Side Middle School as the eighth-grade coach, coaching alongside Charlie Haviza. He coached eighth and ninth grade while at UC. He moved on to Coldwater and coached ninth grade and JV boys while he was there. Monroe Central was his next stop where he coached seventh grade, ninth grade JV, and finally the varsity boys’ basketball teams. The past five years Byrum has been the varsity boys basketball coach at Randolph Southern. During that time Randolph Southern won a sectional championship.

Coach Byrum said that it is nice to be home. He expressed that in his early coaching days it was always all about the wins. Now he realizes that the relationships with his players and working to get them ready for life is the important thing. He said one of his primary goals for Union City Basketball is a sectional championship.
