GREENVILLE — A man facing multiple charges related to heroin trafficking entered a surprise change of plea in Darke County Common Pleas Court Friday morning and was sentenced to prison time.

Rick L. Fleetwood, 49, of Greenville, had been charged with possession of more than 100 units of heroin as well as four counts of trafficking in heroin. A status hearing was expected Friday morning, but instead Fleetwood agreed to a plea deal, pleading guilty to the possession charge, a second-degree felony, while the other charges were dismissed.

Prosecution and defense made a joint recommendation of a five-year prison term, which was imposed by Judge Jonathan P. Hein Friday morning.

Fleetwood was arrested in August in possession of 259 capsules of heroin, according to Darke County Prosecutor R. Kelly Ormsby III. He had been out on bond from a previous arrest for trafficking in heroin and was incarcerated again on a $200,000 bond.

In addition to his prison time, Fleetwood was fined a mandatory $7,500 for the second-degree felony drug crime. He also was ordered to pay restitution of $695 to the Greenville Police Department and $330 to the Darke County Sheriff’s Office for costs and lab fees incurred in the investigation.
