DARKE COUNTY — “Cool cats,” both full grown and kittens, are just waiting to be adopted into loving homes, and are available now at the Darke County Humane Society, located at 7053 OH-49, in Greenville.

One “cool cat” fun fact is that a cat’s claws extend from front of its toes in order to catch and hold prey, tear meat from bones, ward off threats, and climb. Because cats are digitigrades (meaning they walk on the tips of their toes), they can often have trouble balancing properly if they are “declawed.”An average cat has five clawed digits on each of their front paws and four on each of their rear paws. The innermost, shorter claws on the front paws are called the dewclaws, and help cats hold their prey. When cats retract their claws, the claw tips can be seen protruding from their fur. When using their claws, cats contract a tendon to extend them out and down. This claw extension and retraction is similar to human beings pointing their toes forward and flexing their ankles back.

Nicholas, a 1.5-year-old male black and white Shorthair, is casual, mellow “cool cat.” Although shy at first, Nicholas loves attention and being cuddled.

Snow White, a 1.5-year-old female black Shorthair with sparkling emerald green eyes, is a playful cat who is always ready for adventure.

Come out to the Darke County Humane Society and meet these fabulous felines. Shelter hours are: Mon. (11 a.m. to 5 p.m.), Tues. (11 a.m. to 5 p.m.) Weds. (11 a.m. to 5 p.m.), Fri.
