Commissioners talk airport, county budgeting

GREENVILLE —The Darke County Board of Commissioners met on Wednesday to discuss the Darke County Airport, upcoming construction projects and county budgeting. Commissioners Matt Aultman, Mike Stegall and Larry Holmes were all present.

The board approved Resolution (R-159-2021), to advance $1,062.50 from the general fund to cover a bill regarding the tower relocation project at the Darke County Airport. The funds will advance back into the general fund once revenue is received from the 2021 FAA Air Improvement Program Grant.

The board approved a letter of recommendation from Mote & Associates and signed a notice of award to Tom’s Construction in St. Henry regarding an upcoming detention pond pipe outlet replacement in Union City, Ohio. The notice states that Motes & Associates accepted the bid from Tom’s Construction on May 3, for the replacement of a storm sewer along with six manholes and additionally two alternate bids provided by Tom’s Construction. The price of the of the awarded contract is $261,554. The project will be funded with CDBG critical infrastructure program grant funds; in addition, Darke County has committed $35,000 of revolving loan funds and the village of Union City is contributing $35,000 for the project.

The board approved a notice to professional consultants for county project and budget planning. The notice states the board is planning several projects and for budgetary purposes, the commissioners are requesting the projects be reviewed and projected costs determined. With the approval of this notice, the board is soliciting statements of qualifications and other supporting information from qualified professional consulting firms, teams or individuals. The consultants must submit three copies of their response to the board no later than 4 p.m. on Friday, June 18.

Commissioner Larry Holmes said he’s happy to see the board is thinking ahead.

“I’m pleased to see that we’re actually planning,” he said. “You can plan and execute or you can plan, and adjust and execute. But if you don’t plan, you just react and get where you don’t want to get.”

The board also announced the retirement of Darke County Recorder Linda Stachler. Stachler is in her fourth term as the recorder. The commissioners thanked Stachler for her many years in public office, and said the Darke County Republican party will soon be looking for a new candidate to fill her position.
