GREENVILLE — Ohio Gov. John R. Kasich proclaimed January 2017 School Board Recognition Month in the state. During the Thursday, Jan. 12 Greenville City School (GCS) District Board meeting, district Superintendent Doug Fries recognized the board of education members, with certificates, for their willing leadership and service to GCS.
Those members recognized were Vice President Brad Gettinger, David Ernst, David Madden, Fred Matix and newly elected board President James Sommer.
“This is not a job anybody does for any other reason but service to help the community,” Fries said. “It’s a lot of time and you put up with many issues – many of them very positive, and many of them very difficult to deal with. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication, not only to GCS but to education across the state.”
In a Superintendent’s Report, Fries thanked people for attending the school concerts and theater programs during the winter break. He also thanked Lewis and Michael Moving and Storage.
“That was quite an undertaking to box up four schools and have those moved out to the K-8,” Fries said. “They did a wonderful job with a great crew, a lot of manpower and a lot of trucks.”
According to Fries, District Treasurer Carla Surber is preparing the buildings for some auctions through Midwest Auctioneers & Realty, Inc. East school’s auction is Jan. 28, and South school’s is Feb. 25. The board also approved a contract with the same company for the sale of 15 modular units to take place in March. These units will be sold with a 10 percent buyer’s premium, Fries said.
Treasurer Carla Surber said that the best thing that happened this week for the district is that they received the historic paintings back that will be installed at Greenville High School.
“I am really excited,” she said. “That is a real positive and a real history for the kids at the high school. It centers all around Greenville.”
Board President Sommer recognized Surber’s clean audits.
“I want to thank Carla for your work on the audit,” he said. “It’s not everyday that somebody gets a clean audit. This happens year in and year out.
“It’s been sixteen years,” Matix added.
The board approved Alt & Witzig Engineering, Inc, with a bid of $4,400, as the company to perform soil borings at the Greenville High School parcel in order to facilitate the Harmon Track and Field project. This work will provide the information needed for design criteria. The contractor is selected based on the recommendation of Mike Henderson of Mote and Asssociates, Inc.
In addition, the board approved an agreement with Mote and Associaties, Inc. as criteria engineer for the track and field design-build project. Total compensation for the Criteria Engineer shall not exceed $31,500. Mike Henderson Design Engineer for Mote and Associates attended the meeting. He suggested a meeting between the Harmon Field Committee and school board to help finalize the criteria documents. A grant also needs to be fused into the project, he said.
“The next step is to ask for request for quotes for a design builder firm to work on the phase one of the track, as well as possible alternates for the field so with that, we want to keep things moving forward.” Henderson said.
The Board decided on a work session of Jan. 19 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the details.
The following donations were accepted by the board: the Darke County Center for the Arts – Anna Bier Gallery, $400 to the High School Art Department; Francis Rentals, a camera value at $498 to the high school IMTV; Whirlpool Corporation, $100 to the middle school Ace Program; David Torrence, $125 to the high school Student Council; LuAnn Boyer gave $30 to the high school student council; middle school Parent Teacher Association, $205 to the middle school Washington, D.C. trip; Carl Brown, $100 to the high school Student Council; Arby’s GZK, Inc., certificates valuing $4,234 to the middle school Ace Program; Gordon Orthodontics donated breakfast for staff on Jan. 10.
“We appreciate all that support from the community,” Sommer said.
The board approved a Cooperative Funding Agreement with Columbus City Schools for education services at National Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio for a student in care at the rate of $42.46 per hour of direct student instruction. It also approved the purchase of two 84-passenger school buses and one 84-passenger handicapped accessible custom school bus from Cardinal bus Sales and Service at a total cost of $290,104 and the purchase of a John Deere T-Series Utility Vehicle from Koenig Equipment, Inc at the price of $17,074.79, which according to Fries, quotes were received for this item and Koenig was the lowest bidder.
In addition, the board approved the annual technical support/service contract renewal for the fingerprint system through Biometric Information Management at a cost of $600 and a storage building at the K-8 facility with the recommendation of Garmann Miller Architects and Engineers at a total cost of $154,848. The base bid is $126,737; the alternate is $28,112 are to be paid from permanent improvement funds.
The board also approved the creation of a Greenville Student Athlete Council at Greenville High School beginning in the spring of 2017. The club will be advised voluntarily by Athletic Director Dustin Yingst.
A second shift premium of .10 per hour was approved by the board for Jon Price, for custodian duties beyond the regular school day, effective January 3, for the 2016/17 school year.
Gettinger said he agrees with the idea of paying a shift premium for second shift.
“But, I look at that amount – .10 over a work week – it’s $4,” he said. Maybe that is something we can revisit. It’s almost laughable to call that amount a premium.”
“This is something that has been there for years,” Fries said. “I am not opposed at looking at other scales.”
In other news, Board Member David Ernst did a quick shout out for the Friends of Harmon Field.
“We are raffling off a fantastic picture of Archie Griffin, Jerry Lucas and Jack Nicklaus – all signed,” he said. “Tickets are sold at every home basketball game, for $10 each. The drawing will take place on February 17.”
