Students exploring career choices

DARKE COUNTY — Students in the Switching Gears program focused this week on exploring career choices. Switching Gears is the title of this year’s Summer Youth Program, offered through the Darke County Board of Developmental Disabilities (Darke DD).

This program teaches work and independent living skills. Students viewed career videos and discussed skills needed for the careers they were interested in. Activities helped students learn how to be good workers and what qualities employers are looking for in employees.

In one illustration, students viewed three glasses of water – one with Alka-Seltzer, one with Bromo-Seltzer, and one with aspirin. This gave the students a visual of three types of employees – the first makes things happen (Alka-Seltzer), the second watches what happens (Bromo-Seltzer), the third type wonders what happened (aspirin). These visual illustrations led to a lively discussion with the students.

Other activities included a tour of Greenville Transit System for students to better understand transportation options in our community and how to use them. The weekly business tour was given by Tabbie Grice, store manager at Hot Head Burritos. Grice presented the tour as if they were a new employee learning the job duties, layout of the restaurant, and importance of customer service. Student questions included, “What is a typical day like working here?” and “What skills are needed to work here?” After the tour, several students shared that they were more interested in working in food service than before the tour.

The students also spent one day at the OSU Extension Learning Center concentrating on independent living and life skills. The youth prepared their lunch, which ended with a cookie ice cream sandwich that they prepared. Other skills activities helped the youth learn how to stay within a grocery budget and learn grocery shopping skills.
