ANSONIA — The release of the annual Ohio School Report Cards by the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) brings comments from county administrators.
Ansonia Local School District Superintendent Jim Atchley said is overall pleased with the scores.
“We were number three in the county of number of indicators met with 11,” he said “Over the last five years we have scored anywhere from number two to four in this area. It is good to see we stayed where we have been with new testing, and the passing percentage increased to 80 percent from 75 percent. “
In addition, Ansonia Local School District ranked 86 out of 163 in a comparison group of schools ranking the percentage of funds used for classroom instruction. A rank of one indicates the highest percent spent on classroom instruction. The district spent 65 percent of funds on classroom instruction. While schools and districts have received A-F letter grades on “Indicators Met” and“Performance Index” for several years, something new this year was the increase from 75 to 80 percent of students needing to score proficient or higher on each state test. Some of Ansonia’s summary of report card components and grades are as follows:
Achievement – C = Performance Index – C, 78.4 percent, and Indicators Met – F, 45.8 percent
The Achievement component represents the number of students who passed the state tests and how well they performed on them. The Performance Index measures the test results of every student, not just those who score proficient or higher. Indicators Met measures the percent of students who have passed state tests. It also includes the gifted indicator. Test results are reported for each student in a grade and subject. The passage rate for each indicator is 80 percent.
K-3 Literacy – C
The K-3 Literacy component measures how well district does in getting students who struggle in reading to meet third grade reading proficiency.
“The District scored a “C” this year, up from an “F” last year,” Supt. Atchley said. “Elementary staff provided reading intervention to those students who were identified as “at- risk” of meeting third grade reading guarantee.”
Progress – C
The Progress component looks closely at the growth that all students are making based on their past performances. The students in grades fourth – eighth, overall, made progress similar to the statewide expectation in all tests. They made more progress than expected in Language Arts. In addition, they made progress similar to the statewide expectation in the subjects of math and science. The high school results show students made progress similar to the statewide expectation in English 1 and Geometry. Students made less progress than expected in English II, and more progress than expected in Algebra 1.
Graduation Rate – The district scored an “A” for both four year and five year results.
As a district, we will look at the areas we did well in and areas where we need to make improvement,” Atchley said. “The staff will meet in grade level teams and/or departments to analyze results and address instruction for areas we need to improve upon. We look at the report card as one measurement of how the district is doing. Obviously, we want to continue to score as well or better than we have in the past. The staff work very hard in analyzing the assessment data and to make instructional changes to better prepare the students from year to year.”
