HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) – A southwest Ohio sheriff has decided to stay out of the race for the U.S. House seat being vacated by Speaker John Boehner (BAY’-nur).
Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones had said he was considering a congressional run but announced Friday that he will stay in the job he was first elected to in 2004.
Jones has drawn national attention for strong talk against illegal immigration. He says Congress could use someone “willing to speak their mind and stir things up.”
Second-term Republican state Sen. Bill Beagle of Tipp City joined the 8th District race this week. Troy teacher J.D. Winteregg also is running after a 2014 primary challenge to Boehner, who’s stepping down Oct. 30.
A large field is expected in the Republican-dominated district. Special election dates haven’t been set.
