New Madison News: A wet start to September

By Shirley Dubbs - New Madison News

The water on the south end of New Madison brought a headache and water sogged basement items this past weekend. Thanks to the fire department for working along side of the residents to pump and drain the incessant water flow. Area departments also helped and residents were appreciative.

The rain has farmers worried after a summer of seeing strong growth. Pooling water and mud are the result of the constant rainfall over several days.

Congratulations to Dave Singer and Greg Pearson for their election to the Darke County Fair Board. Both are Tri-Village graduates and both are dedicated community people.

The New Madison Public Library is part of a Miami Valley community read. A book will be chosen by vote of the reading public and then everyone is invited to share in the experience of reading that chosen book. The valley read will be from March l through April 15. The Dayton library is no longer sponsoring the big read and the libraries in this area have decided to build on that foundation but sponsor their own valley read.

If you are interested in joining the library’s Craft and Create group, then meet with current participants at l p.m. on Aug. 24. This has become a fun and popular addition to the library’s programming.

A new program will be the Birding experience when local patrons join in collaboration with the Darke County parks on 10 a.m., Saturday, October 13. Mark your calendars if you are interested in learning more about the feathered friends who entertain us.

The American Legion will not have chicken dinners in September. However the popular meal will be offered during the school fair. Breakfast is always available and has become a regular morning meeting spot for many in the community. Serving is 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Burger Nite continues on Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. Poker is Friday at 7:30 p.m. while karaoke continues on Saturdays from 7 to 11 p.m.

Lets hope for sunshine and drier days in September.
