New Madison News: Voting is a privilege and a responsibility

Casting our ballots is a privilege and responsibility. The right to have that freedom of participation comes at the cost of protection. Veterans Day is approaching and it is the time of year to pause and think about those who serve our nation.

Veterans Day is Nov. 11 and a time for thanks and reflection on the service of men and women. We salute those who serve now and those who served in our past.

Locally Laroy Farst Post 245, American Legion, will serve the Veterans Bean Supper on Sunday, Nov. 11, beginning at 4 p.m. This will also be the traditional time to place tattered flags in the collection box for the annual flag burning ceremony. The box is available for your flag donation any day.

The menu at the Legion’s dinner will be beans and ham, cornbread and slaw.

Honor the veterans in your life and neighborhood by voting and saying thank you for military service.

Also mark your calendars for the annual harvest supper at the United Methodist Church. This year the abundant menu will be offered on Saturday, Nov. 10. Turkey, ham, oyster and plain dressing with mashed potatoes, noodles, green beans, rolls and cranberry salad will be offered. Pie and cake are planned on the dessert table. Serving begins at 4:30 and will continue through 6 p.m. A free will offering will be taken. You can order take out. You might consider ordering a couple of extra meals for the freezer.

The holiday meals and events are starting to fill calendars. The students at Tri-Village will have the 21st through the 23rd to enjoy sleeping a bit longer.

This week we are all adjusting to the autumn changing of clocks. This twice per year ritual always catches someone running on the wrong time and all of us noticing body and sleep adjustments. Maybe we should just set it, forget it and accept the seasonal changes.
