Since February is known as Heart Month, this is the month to raise awareness about heart disease and how people can prevent it — both at home and in the community.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. Every year,one in four deaths are caused by heart disease. Heart disease can often be prevented when people make healthy choices and manage their health conditions. Make a difference; you can make healthy changes to lower your risk of developing heart disease. Controlling and preventing risk factors is also important for people who already have heart disease.
To lower your risk: 1) Watch your weight, 2) Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke, 3) Control your cholesterol and blood pressure, 4) If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation; and 5) Get active and eat healthy.
It’s a girl! Audrey Faye McKinney was born to Daniel and Amanda McKinney on Dec. 1, 2015, at 7:34 p.m. at Cape Fear Hospital in Fayetteville, North Carolina. She weighed 7 pounds 8 ounces, and measured 20 1/2 inches long. Daniel is the son of Michelle Studebaker McKinney, from Arcanum (Class of 89), and Patrick McKinney, from Greenville (Class of 89). Patrick and Michelle moved to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in 1993 as Patrick was serving in the Army. Daniel is currently serving in the Army as he is in basic training in Fort Benning, Georgia. Great-grandparents are Rick and Sue Studebaker of Arcanum and great-great-grandmother is Thelma Studebaker of Troy. Congratulations!!
It’s a boy for the Fourman Family! His name is Josiah Preston Fourman Jr. and was born on Jan. 2, 2016, at 2:55 a.m. He is the great-grandson of Beverly and Janet Fourman of Arcanum. Josiah Jr. was born at Baptist East Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, to Josiah, Sr. and Jessica Fourman weighing 8 pounds 7 ounces, and measuring 22 1/2 inches long. Proud grandparents are Tim and Jenny Fourman of Troy. This little guy makes four generations in the family! Grandma Jenny reports that they are anxiously waiting for the little guy to make a visit to Ohio for a picture of the guys all together!
Many of you may remember Virginia Clark of South Main Street. She and her late husband, Ralph, lived in the big yellow brick house for many, many years. One of her daughters contacted me over the holidays with an update on their immediate and extended family. Virginia now lives in Crooksville, Ohio, close to two of her daughters, Shirley and Connie. Both Shirley and Connie are AHS grads and Shirley was a former teacher at Arcanum. Shirley is now retired from teaching full-time there in Crooksville. For the past four years, Shirley has been hosting exchange students; this current school year she is hosting Jessica from Europe and continues to substitute teach in the local district there; this is her 45th year teaching. Connie’s family continues to grow – her oldest son, John Montgomery became engaged this past year to Erin Gent; they will be married on May 7, 2016. Connie’s youngest son, James Montgomery, and his wife, Haley, are expecting a grandson in May as well; she states that they are very excited to become grandparents.
Congratulations to McKenzie Sharrits on breaking the record for the most “3-point shots” in a game at a recent Arcanum girls’ varsity basketball game.
Congratulations to Charles Rippee, a seventh-grade student at Arcanum Butler Middle School, who placed third overall at the recent county spelling bee! Also participating was fourth-grader, Liam Chadwick, who finished with a strong seventh-place finish. Prior to the individual competition, a team competition was held for all participants and the alternates (students who placed second in their school competitions). The Arcanum team placed first in this first ever Spelling Bowl! Congratulations to Charles, Liam, Aiden Psczulkosk and Kristyn Monroe.
Last Friday night was the yearly BIG game between AHS and FM; always a great basketball game with generally a sold-out crowd and every year a rivalry that never fails to feed basketball fever; a wonderful unexpected gift was made. The students, staff, and members of the Arcanum School community presented to their rivals a gift of $1,532 that will keep on giving for years to come in the memory of Hudson and Katy Nestor to begin a scholarship at FM in their name. What an excellent example of giving was taught and learned by members of our community.
