For most of us, the best way to learn things is through personal experience. Through my personal journey I have discovered where and what is at the Wayne Cancer Center, as well as, the Cancer Association of Darke County.
I believe Wayne HealthCare CEO Wayne Deschambeau and other principals, such as Dr. Daniel McKellar are to be praised for their vision, commitment and dedication in working with Premier Health and Dayton Physicians Network to bring cancer care and treatment to the Darke County region.
The cancer center is a $5 million facility located at 1111 Sweitzer St., offering radiation, chemotherapy and other cancer treatment services. Within this 13,800-square-foot building there are physician offices, exam rooms, a chemotherapy area with six infusion bays, a laboratory, pharmacy and a linear accelerator for radiation therapy. Radiologists, oncologists and hematologists from Dayton Physicians Network have office hours in Greenville, which means the doctors do the travelling, allowing the cancer patient to reduce his/her travel time and expenses, which up until recently patients had to travel to Good Samaritan Dayton North for treatment, as often as five days a week.
Within the Wayne Cancer Center building is also the Cancer Association of Darke County (CADC). This is a local and independent organization has been operating for 20 years with a board comprised of Darke County residents serving cancer patients who reside within Darke County.
The CADC exists to provide information, according to need, to Darke County cancer patients. The CADC sponsors a free “Living with Cancer” support group which meets from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Wayne HealthCare Board room on the first Thursday of the months March, June, September and December. Patients, family and friends are welcome to attend.
The association also offers assistance (after insurance and other benefits) with transportation, medication, medical supplies, nutritional supplements, head wear (wigs, hats, scarves, etc.) and they even have a lending library of more than 100 books on cancer. These services are made possible through local grants, memorials, fundraisers, corporate and personal donations.

Congratulations to Mitchell Stover for achieving Olympic qualifying times in the 100-meter backstroke and the 200-meter individual medley and good luck as he attempts to qualify in three more swimming events. Mitchell graduated from Versailles and is now competing for Wright State University where he broke four individual school records, as well as many relay records.
