New Madison News: Camp Growth to open

0

Writing this column, I am enjoying the gentle rain giving tender crops and garden plants a burst of refreshment. Flowers beckon from lawns and porches.

The knock out roses are popular and brighten many landscapes. As we travel, we enjoy the floral displays that brighten our travels. We all plant and pot for our enjoyment but neighbors and visitors enjoy the buds and blooms too.

The kick-off for Camp Growth at the New Madison United Methodist Church is set for Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. Dinner is being provided by Chipotle and kids can share fun time with parents with pony rides, face painting and a bounce house. The free meal and free summer school offering is open to the Tri-Village community children going into sixth grade. If you didn’t get your child registered, come to the kick-off and sign them up!

The New Madison Public Library is planning Marble Maze on Thursday. This fun event is part of the summer reading program and is planned for youngsters that 5 and older.

The library is busy with the Hollansburg Summer Reading program again this summer. Books are provided on site. The staff shares stories with the children. This program is underway and will continue on Mondays and Wednesdays through the summer. A hot meal is provided to children in the neighborhood who need food assistance. Come to the Hollansburg Community Center to share a good lunch and good fellowship.

This program is now in the sixth year. Sponsors are the Beech Grove Church of the Brethren, Cedar Grove Church of the Brethren and families in the Hollansburg area. Contributors to funding are also the New Madison Kiwanis, Downing Fruit Farm, Friends of the New Madison Public Library, and teachers and students at Tri-Village. If you want to make a contribution, or ask questions, contact Heather Brown at 997-2209, or Tony Price at 997-3675.

Plan to thank Dad on Sunday, the 19th. A hug, card, gift or favorite dessert will make him happy.

Congratulations this week to local scholarship winners in the 2016 graduating class: Civic Center- Casey Puckett, TVEA- Jenna Coffman and Jenna Fisherback, TV Foundation- Zack Bevins and Sarah Witmer, Marilyn Hofaker Memorial- Paige Sloan, Sarah Bevins Memorial- Zack Bevins and Sarah Witmer, Kiwanis-Meghan Brandon, Riley Hollinger, Zack Bevins, Shelby Dowler and Sarah Witmer.
