New Madison News: Remembering John Glenn

0

Last week we lost a true American hero. John Glenn passed away at age 95. The Ohioan never forgot his roots and with worldwide acknowledgement of his accomplishments in space and American politics, he stayed a gentleman and patriot.

Former students who traveled with me to Washington D.C. will remember encounters with Senator Glenn. He always was cordial, open to questions and encouraging to students to consider service to our nation. He always reminded students of the Space Museum’s display and was pleased to know it was on the Tri-Village agenda. In a time when dissension and division are making news headlines, it is pleasant to recognize a true hero.

Annually there is a presentation and congratulations for volunteer work at the New Madison Public Library. Marilyn Fritz was this year’s honored recipient and was presented with the Phyllis Cole Dubbs award for service to the library. She has organized a genealogy area and is willing to work with local residents in connecting with their past.

The school will have a Christmas break beginning with early release on Tuesday, Dec. 20. Then the official holiday vacation begins Wednesday, Dec. 21 and continues through Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017. The new semester will begin on Monday, Jan. 16, 2017.

Time for a fresh start and a countdown for seniors in the class of 2017.

Don’t forget to consider gift certificates within the Tri-Village community. These gifts are popular and help support the local businesses.

This week’s tip of the hat is to Brad Gray for over 200 wins as the girls basketball coach. He is continuing his success with another strong start. This is true of both the boys and girls teams. The girls will be playing Newton at home on the Thursday, Dec. 15 and then participate in the Barn Ball Classic on Saturday and Sunday, away. They will close out the year at Ansonia on Thursday, Dec. 22 and then face Bethel on Thursday, Dec. 29, at home.

The Patriot men will play at Newton on the Friday, Dec. 16 but will be home on the 17th in a game with Greeneview. Franklin Monroe will host the team on the 23rd and then the Patriot Holiday Classic is set for Tuesday, Dec. 27 and Wednesday, Dec. 28. The JV plays at 3 p.m. and the varsity plays at 6.
