Versailles News: Some alone time

0

This winter has been incredible; to say it has been mild is almost an understatement. I don’t believe the Versailles school system missed any days due to winter weather. Although this disappoints some of the students and faculty it looks like they get today off for the girls’ basketball state semi-finals game. Hopefully the girls play well enough to play one more game.

However, given this time of year, it seems many of us feel stressed, weighed down by the day to day events that never seem to end perpetuated by the time change, which takes time for the body to recover.

Stress can be physical or emotional. It’s not a matter of whether we feel stressed or not, because everyone experiences stress. It’s rather a matter of how we handle it that tells the tale. Physical stress can occur from simple infection or tiredness. When we lack adequate rest or our bodies becomes run down from a cold or ailment we cannot cope with life, or at least we cannot cope as well as we can when we are healthy and rested.

Stress can change how we cope with even the most uneventful of days. But how many days are truly uneventful? In our weakness we open ourselves to the possibility of making bad decisions, behaving poorly, jumping to conclusions, and misunderstanding others. Many days are a struggle without the compounding nature of stress. That’s way periodically we all need a break from our daily demands. If we listen to our body, mind and spirit we can prevent “making a mountain out of a mole hill.”

Silence and solitude can rejuvenate the mind body and spirit and is capable of restoring us to optimum health. In the silence of our heart we are able to communicate with our creator. When do you need quiet time? If you cannot muster a smile (both outwardly and inside) you are in desperate need of personal time for prayer, mediation and contemplation.

Don’t feel guilty when you need to retreat to your “fortress of solitude”, for you are doing everyone a favor by remaining healthy and well adjusted. But if you’re not in need of alone time you can celebrate St. Patrick’s Day today and throughout the weekend.
