Arcanum News: Enjoy the Fair

0

The last week of summer for Darke County is a great week with the Darke County Fair and then everything turns to fall activities – school, football games, cooler evenings, bonfires, hayrides – how quickly the season will change in the next few weeks.

While you are at the fair this week don’t forget to support your local Music Boosters. The A# Music Boosters and their food concession have been a fixture at the Darke County Fair for a little over 40 years in the same spot right next to the Putt-Putt Golf course. There is still seating available under the tent, and as always they will serve their wonderful sandwiches, French fries, kid’s meals, and Mehaffie’s pies. See you at the A# Tent! Be sure to stop by and support our youth while you are at the fair! Did you know that the A# Tent was started for the 1971 fair by the A# Club? That first year included nightly concerts at the back of the tent by the AHS Stage Band with lots of rhythm and blues hits arranged by Mr. Ronnie Ball, the band director at that time. This year’s HS Band will perform on Monday, August 21 in the Band Performance at the Darke County Fair on the Grandstand track at 7 p.m.

Former resident, Janet Conley and her husband Phil will be visiting from Tennessee this week. Janet will be performing at the Gazebo at the Darke County Fair on Friday, August 25 from 4 to 6 p.m. Janet promises it will be a friendly show of music and comedy; and a good time to be had by all! Get some friends together and come on out to the Darke County Fair to visit!

Congratulations to Mr. Howard Glen Eley! Glen was awarded his Arcanum High School Diploma at the August Board of Education meeting. A WWII Veteran, Glen was to have graduated with the Class of 1939 but enlisted and was gone by the time graduation was held that year. The community thanks you for your service and you deserve to be congratulated, Glen!

The first day of school for students at Arcanum-Butler Schools will be Tuesday, August 29. This will be a regular day of school, with all grade levels attending regular sessions.

The Arcanum Athletic Department will be selling athletic passes for the 2017-18 school years on Monday, August 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the high school gymnasium.

Immanuel Baptist Church, 500 W. South Street is gearing up for all of their children and youth activities. All community children are welcome to join in on the fun and participate at any or all of these activities.

Awana begins on Wednesday, September 6 at 6:30 p.m. for all children ages 3 years-old through sixth grade. The program is every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at IBC weekly through April. What is Awana, you ask? Awana (derived from the first letters of “Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed” as taken from 2 Timothy 2:15) is an international evangelical Christian nonprofit organization founded in 1950, headquartered in Streamwood, Illinois. The mission of Awana is to help “reach kids, equip leaders and change the world for God. All children are welcome to come to Awana at IBC; Awana is a global, nonprofit ministry committed to the belief that the greatest impact for Christ starts with kids who know, love and serve Him.

For many years, IBC has hosted “5th Quarter” for the youth of our community after a home football game for refreshments, fellowship, and devotional time. This year 5th Quarter will start immediately after the home football games on September 1, 15, 29, October 13 and 20 for ages 5th grade through high school until 11 p.m.

Also at IBC is 8th Period which meets begins on Tuesday, September 5 directly after school until 4 p.m. and every Tuesday thereafter for ages 5th grade through high school. 8th Period is a great time with snacks, devotions, and dodge ball.

“You don’t really understand human nature unless you know why a child on a merry-go-round will wave at his parents every time around—and why his parents will always wave back.” ~William D. Tammeus
