Sweet and Sassy: Local ceremonies touch lives

By Linda Moody

The Veterans Day services I attended on Wednesday were special, and I know they had to be for the veterans who were honored locally.

They [veterans] have to be proud people and we should be as well. We Americans should be appreciative of their service to the country, too.

Sure, it would be very, very nice not to have conflicts in other countries or even here in the United States, but it is always going to happen.

And, we can always pray that things will get better and keep us out of harm’s way,

And, I think a lot of ceremonies held this week showed that we are thankful for their dedication to this nation.

I attended the Mississinawa Valley Schools’ program and the Veterans Day program at Versailles Health Care Center, and my co-workers also attended veteran-related functions that day.

A tribute to the Vietnam War was included in Mississinawa Valley’s program, and a couple of songs sung throughout the presentation are ones I had not heard until then. They really touched my heart as I’m sure it did for others in attendance, including students. A lot of people in Darke County died during that war, including a classmate, Gerald Subler, and a former classmate, Don Byrum. Then, there are others who died as a result of that conflict, via Agent Orange, after their return home. Among those, I believe, are my brother-in-law, Tom Brumbaugh Sr., who died April 9, 1980, and Ben Bowman, who passed earlier this year.

A group of veterans in Versailles presented a program and gave gifts to the veterans at Versailles Health Care Center on Wednesday…very touching.

I just want to publicly thank all veterans, past and present, for serving and helping protect America. My father, Lee Moody, uncle Jim Moody, a bunch of cousins, and many friends in veterans organizations in the area…your dedication will never be forgotten.
