Tri-Village girls basketball team remains perfect in CCC with win vs. National Trail

GETTYSBURG – Tri-Village hadn’t hit the hardwood for nearly 18 days, last playing on Dec. 20, and the Lady Patriots struggled to shake off the rust at National Trail.

National Trail came into the game minus its senior star Miranda Mize, who warmed up but it was apparent she was in a lot of pain and unable to go.

Rachel Miller got the Patriots going in the opening frame, scoring five points on a trey and a deuce, and Brooke Godown added four points to help the Patriots go up 14-4.

Allie Downing scored five points in second quarter to lead another 14-point quarter for the Patriots.

Trail responded with triples from both Evan and JaLynn Byrd that accounted for all of the Blazer points in the second quarter as Tri-Village held a 28-10 halftime advantage.

Tri-Village would spread it around in the second half with eight players scoring at least a bucket including reserves Edie Morris and Autaum Moore.

Points were hard to come by for the Blazers in the third quarter with JaLynn Byrd scoring all four points for National Trail, and they would add six points in the final stanza … but it wasn’t enough to keep pace with Tri-Village who would go on to claim a 55-20 Cross County Conference win.

“We had moments where we looked good, moments we were lackluster, and maybe the long break had something to do with that,” Tri-Village girls basketball coach Brad Gray said on the play of his team.

“Our effort was OK, but our recognition was off. We had a size advantage, and we didn’t really do much to exploit that tonight,” Gray added.

“Give credit to National Trail. Their guards pressured us and did a good job of keeping us from getting the ball into Downing and Mann,” Gray concluded.

Shelbey Dowler led the Patriots with six assists, Downing had 10 rebounds, four steals and 12 points and was the only Patriot in double figure scoring.

JaLynn Byrd led the Blazers with 10 points.

National Trail will be back in action on Tuesday traveling to Cambridge City, Indiana.

Tri-Village will square off with visiting Miami East on Saturday at noon in a key CCC game that could decide the conference title.
