Clay Guillozet becomes Greenville’s all-time leading scorer

GREENVILLE – After helping lead Greenville to its first boys basketball conference championship in 60 years last season, Clay Guillozet added to his illustrious career with an individual achievement this year.

Guillozet became the Greenville boys basketball program’s career points leader on Jan. 8 in a Greater Western Ohio Conference game against Piqua. The Green Wave senior scored 31 points in the 73-62 win and finished the night with 1,208 career points – passing the previous record of 1,203 that was set by Jake Cook from the class of 1993.

“It’s fantastic,” Greenville coach Mike Bashore said of Guillozet setting the record. “If anybody knew how hard the kid works. He comes in on off days puts two, three-hundred shots up a day. Absolutely is constantly working year round on his game. He’ll come home from football practice and put 200 shots up in the gym. That’s just the kind of work ethic he has. And he’s a great kid. He’s a great teammate. The rest of his teammates love being around him.”

Guillozet, who was named the GWOC North boys basketball player of the year as a junior, added to his record with 31 points in a win against Eaton and 30 points in a win against Coldwater, giving him 1,269 entering the weekend.

“It definitely feels good,” Guillozet said of setting the record. “The team’s been working so hard all year. We’re obviously chasing a GWOC North title for the second year in a row so it’s just nice that all the work that the team puts in and that I put in outside of practice has paid off.”

For the season Guillozet leads the entire GWOC with 26.1 points per game. He’s not just a scorer, though, and shows his versatility with 8.0 rebounds a game and 2.3 assists a game in seven contests this season.

The Greenville senior is capable of scoring inside or outside, whatever helps his team win.

“It makes him hard to guard,” Bashore said. “You can’t just sit on a jump shot because he’ll go right around you and get to the basket. He proved that again (Monday against Coldwater). He took it right at the big kid a couple times and got baskets. The thing is he makes everybody else better around him.”

Guillozet has been a key asset for Greenville throughout his career. As a freshman he averaged 8.1 points a game and then averaged 16.9 points a game as a sophomore and 22.5 points a game as a junior.

When he entered high school, he never thought about potentially becoming the Wave’s all-time leading scorer.

“As I kind of started getting to go into my sophomore year some people started talking about the record and how I was on the track to get it,” Guillozet said. “So that was definitely big, but it’s not really something I thought about coming straight into high school.”

While Guillozet is proud of his accomplishment, he is quick to credit his teammates for their contributions in reaching the milestone.

“I think it definitely just shows what has happened since Coach Bashore has come in and the time and work that our team has put in each and every day, you know, playing some of the best teams in the GWOC and in the state,” he said. “So it just shows how hard we’ve been working all year.”

Guillozet has cemented his place in Green Wave history, and Bashore said he’s glad he’s got to be a part of it.

“I’m just so proud I’ve been able to be around him for four years,” Bashore said. “It means a lot to me to be able to coach him. He’s definitely made my job a lot easier.”
