Monnin, Teeter named athletes of the week

DARKE COUNTY – A pair of seniors who continued their fabulous seasons with strong performances last week are this week’s Daily Advocate athletes of the week.

This week’s Daily Advocate athletes of the week are Mississinawa Valley boys bowler Joe Teeter and Versailles girls basketball player Lauren Monnin.

Monnin helped lead the Versailles girls basketball team to a Midwest Athletic Conference victory against St. Henry with a game-high 23 points.

For the season the Lady Tiger senior averages 11.5 points per game and 5.5 rebounds per game, both of which are second on her team and among the top 10 in Darke County.

“She has been a consistent scorer and rebounder for us this year,” Versailles coach Jacki Stonebraker said.

Last season Monnin was a key player as Versailles won the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division III state championship. This season the multi-skilled player has stepped into an even bigger role for the Lady Tigers.

“As an undersized post player, she uses her quickness to go around her defender,” Stonebraker said. “She is also a very versatile defensive player that can guard a post or a guard.”

Teeter leads all Darke County high school bowlers with an average of 202.2 in 16 games this season. His average is the eighth best in the very tough West Ohio High School Bowling Conference.

“He’s done really tremendous,” Mississinawa Valley boys bowling coach Joe Teeter, who also is the younger Teeter’s father, said.

Joe Teeter holds the Mississinawa Valley program records for single game score, two-game series score and highest spare percentage. He set the two-game series record against Russia with games of 258 and 221 for a series of 479. The only program record he doesn’t hold is season average, which he is on pace to break.

“He’s been anchor bowler since he was a freshman, which just speaks of how good of a bowler he is and how good coaching he had in junior high as well,” Coach Teeter said.

The Mississinawa Valley senior is a great leader for his teammates and also is very knowledgeable and can correct his own mistakes without a lot of guidance.

“That’s what makes him such an exceptional bowler,” Coach Teeter said.

After making it to the OHSAA district tournament last season, Joe Teeter hopes to make state this year.

“He definitely has the potential,” Coach Teeter said.
