Gorham Fayette basketball teams go on the defensive

COLUMBUS (AP) — The Gorham Fayette girls basketball team set a standard against Pioneer North Central on Thursday when it posted a shutout in the third quarter en route to 61-14 win.

So what did the Fayette boys do the next night against North Central? The same thing when Fayette outscored the Eagles 16-0 in the third quarter during a 53-20 victory.

The Fayette boys (16-1) suffered a 36-35 overtime loss to Liberty Center on Saturday, but still rank sixth in this week’s Associated Press Division IV poll.

There were other strong defensive efforts throughout the state in girls basketball: Stryker held Edon to four points in each quarter during a 48-12 win on Thursday. Also, Convoy Crestview limited Paulding to just six points through three quarters of a 60-15 victory.

However, Hicksville showed that being stymied in a quarter, especially early in a game, doesn’t always lead to a defeat.

The Aces on Jan. 26 trailed Montpelier 20-6 after the first period and 31-19 at the half but rallied from there. Hicksville went on a 25-7 tear in the third quarter for a 44-38 advantage and held on for a 61-59 win.
