Versailles boys, girls qualify for OHSAA state bowling meet

BEAVERCREEK – The Versailles boys and girls bowling teams competed in the Division II district tournament, and both earned a trip to the state meet with strong performances at Beaver-Vu Bowling Lanes.

The boys team bowled games of 1,064, 988 and 993 for a three-game total of 3,045, putting them in the fourth slot behind Urbana, Northwestern and Kenton Ridge.

Kyle Cotner rolled the highest series with a 690, Luke Shellhaas had a 626, Jacob Wenig had a 599, Brody Hyre a 582 and Alex Groff a 548.

Kyle Cotner had the fourth best three-game series and was name to first team all-Southwest District Division II team.

Versailles held a 97-pin lead over Mechanicsburg before moving into the Baker portion of the competition.

Versailles held off a strong charge made by Mechanicsburg after the Baker rounds by 22 pins to retain the fourth and final qualifying spot to earn the right to participate in the boys state meet.

The Versailles boys will bowl Feb. 26 at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl in Columbus.

The girls team bowled a 914, 953 and a 946 for a total of 2,813 and in the third place spot behind Northwestern and Mechanicsburg.

Hannah Niekamp bowled a 639 series, Olivia Bruening a 588, Brigette Holsapple a 582, Morgan Heitkamp a 520 and Maggie Hetrick 317 in two games along with a 167 from a substitute for a series of 484.

Hannah Niekamp was a first team all-Southwest District Division II team member on the girls team.

Versailles held a very sizeable 277 pin lead over fourth place team Kenton Ridge going into the Baker round.

Versailles held onto the third and final spot after the Baker rounds to qualify for the girls state meet.

The Versailles girls will bowl Feb. 27 at at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl in Columbus.
