Anna eliminates Franklin Monroe boys basketball team from OHSAA tournament

ENGLEWOOD – Franklin Monroe couldn’t overcome a 13-0 start by Anna, bowing out of the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division III sectional tournament at the hands of the Rockets by the score of 85-38.

It was the worst possible start for the Jets, who were unable to find the basket until the 3:37 mark in the opening quarter on a triple by Bradey Hesler.

Despite the bad start and poor shooting the Jets had an opportunity to close the gap … but back-to-back possessions turned disastrous on an over-zealous technical foul call and an in-bound turnover when a Jet player couldn’t see the ball after taking a shot in the face.

The series resulted in the Rockets going up 18-6 to the end the first quarter.

In basketball confidence is everything, and Anna had a heap of it in the second period, scoring 30 points.

The Rockets were firing on all cylinders to the tune of 48 first half points on seven made 3-pointers.

Anna was athletic and big and the Rockets’ bump-and-grind man defense kept Franklin Monroe on its heels all night.

In the second quarter the Jets had their biggest offensive output with 14 points led by Zach Hyre with five points and Mason Conley with four.

Hesler provided most of the offense for the Jets on the night, scoring a team-high 15 points including eight in the first half, but they trailed 48-20.

There would be no miraculous come-back effort on the part of the Jets as Anna continued its torrid shooting in the second half with 18 third quarter and 19 fourth quarter points.

Anna advanced to the sectional title game with an 85-38 win.

It wasn’t the way seniors Zach Hyre, Bradey Hesler, Zach Brown and Landon Peters wanted to go out and the realization that their season and career had come to end hit late in the fourth quarter when the four were replaced in the line-up and plenty of hugs and tears went around.

Hyre ends his spectacular career with 911 points and 530 rebounds.

It was an up-and-down year for the Jets. There were games the Jets offensively looked unstoppable and then other games where the points were hard to come by … Wednesday night the Rockets were unstoppable.

The Jets end the season with a 10-14 record.
