Versailles girls bowling team finishes 4th at OHSAA state meet

COLUMBUS – The Versailles girls bowling team finished fourth in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division II state tournament on Saturday, which is the best finish in program history.

The Lady Tigers made it to the state semifinals before losing in three games to Napoleon at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl in Columbus.

Versailles started out in qualification with games of 815, 873 and 815 for a three-game series of 2,503, putting them in ninth place. The Tigers moved up to seventh place with scores of 179, 198 and 180 in the baker games, giving them a total of 3,060 to qualify for match play.

In the state quarterfinals Norton beat Versailles in the first two baker games, 187-172 and 156-149. The Tigers made a comeback, though, and won the next three games 177-162, 184-160 and 185-163 to win the best-of-five match 3-2 and advance to the state semifinals.

Napoleon then swept Versailles in the semis 168-138, 171-166 and 169-137 to eliminate Versailles from the tournament.

Napoleon went on to lose the state championship match in four games to Mechanicsburg, who beat Coldwater in the other state semifinal.

Versailles’ top individual finisher was senior Hannah Niekamp who rolled games of 204, 182 and 214 for a three-game series of 600. She finished ninth individually to earn second team all-Ohio honors.

Junior Brigette Holsapple finished 30th overall with games of 183, 191 and 172 for a 546 series. Freshman Morgan Heitkamp rolled games of 159, 173 and 148 for a 480 series to place 63rd. Senior Olivia Bruening finished 66th overall as she rolled games of 139, 204 and 135 for a 478 series.
