BRADFORD – The Bradford softball team opened its season on Saturday with an 8-6 win against Coldwater.

It was the Cavilers striking first on the scoreboard with some miscues from the Railroaders’ defense, taking a 1-0 lead into the second inning.

Lilly Elleman sparked Bradford’s offense by taking a hit pitch for her team. With some precise bunts Chelsea Gill and Hannah Fout reached first base. With the bases loaded junior third baseman Olivia Hart smacked a three-run double in the gap, which was followed by senior Tori Smith hitting Hart home safely.

Hart had a fantastic day, also hitting a two-run homer in the fourth. Hart went 4-for-4.

Also getting hits were junior Emily Huggins and sophomore Bailey Wysong.

Tori Smith went seven innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits while striking out six.

“We had a nice game hitting in key spots of the game,” Bradford coach Shon Schaffer said. “Tori pitched very well, and some of those hits she gave up were on me.”
