Bradford baseball team swept by Northridge

DAYTON – The Bradford baseball team lost both games of its season-opening doubleheader at Northridge on Saturday.

Bradford lost the first game of the doubleheader 7-4.

The Railroaders struck first with a run in the top of the first, but the Polar Bears responded with two runs in the first and four in the second. Bradford scored three runs in the third while Northridge added an insurance run in the sixth inning.

Bradford had four hits and three errors in the game while Northridge had 10 hits and two errors.

Wade Gerlach went 2-for-3 with a RBI for Bradford. Parker Smith was 1-for-4 with two stolen bases, a RBI and a run scored. Mason Justice walked once, was hit by a pitch, stole two bases and scored two runs. Andy Branson also had a hit, and Bryant Byers scored a run.

Andy Branson pitched the complete game, allowing six earned runs and one unearned run on 10 hits, two walks, two hit batters and nine strikeouts.

Bradford lost the second game of the doubleheader 11-6.

The Railroaders again took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Polar Bears responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and six more in the second. Bradford scored two more runs in the fourth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh while Northridge added three more in the fifth.

Bradford had six hits and six errors in the game, and Northridge had 10 hits and five errors.

Gerlach went 1-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Jeff Wolf was 1-for-2 with a RBI. Smith, Justice and Andy Branson each had a hit and scored a run. Walker Branson had a hit, Bryson Canan also drove in a run, and Byers scored a run.

Smith was charged with the loss as he pitched three innings and allowed four earned runs and four unearned runs on seven hits, no walks and four strikeouts. Justice pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed two earned runs and one unearned run on two hits, three walks, one hit batter and one strikeout. Wolf pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed no runs on one hit, no walks and one strikeout.
