Greenville boys tennis team defeats Fairborn

GREENVILLE – The Greenville boys tennis team recorded its third consecutive win on Tuesday, defeating Fairborn 4-1 in a home match.

“They played well,” Greenville coach Dennis Kiser said about his players’ performance. “We’ve just got to work on getting better and better. We were missing one of our first doubles players, so we had to adjust our lineup just a little bit. We’ve just got to keep improving, like always. You always don’t want to be satisfied with where you’re at. You want to always continue to get better, and I think we have.”

Greenville was without Tyler Davis at first doubles, who had teamed up with Alex Lance to win three of their first four matches this season.

With Davis out, Greenville moved the duo of Austin Grote and Josh Smith up from second doubles to first doubles. The pair responded well and swept Alex Cao and Tyler Fillback 6-0, 6-0. Grote and Smith are now 4-1 on the season.

Without his usual doubles partner, Lance joined forces with varsity newcomer Max Onkst on Tuesday in second doubles. The Green Wave pair won their first match of the season together 6-1, 6-3 against Austin Lewis and Johhny Ngo.

In singles action Quintin Muhlenkamp improved to 4-1 on the season with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Caleb Arthur in third singles. Second singles player Craig Manges also improved to 4-1 for the Wave as he beat Robert Floyd 6-1, 6-0.

Greenville’s lone loss of Tuesday’s match came at first singles where Noah Haupt won the first set against Nhat Mai 6-1 before dropping the next two 6-1, 6-0. Haupt is now 1-4 on the year, but Kiser isn’t worried about him.

“He holds the fort down for us,” the Green Wave coach said. “He’s clearly our best, and it wasn’t even close. He’s our best player. But he’s struggling sometimes, and it’s off and on. He’s just going to keep getting better. I’m not really too worried about his game. I just want him to do some different things, and we’ve been working on that. It’s more like a mental thing with Noah than anything else.”

Greenville improved to 4-1 with Tuesday’s win while Fairborn fell to 0-2.

The Wave will return to action on Thursday at Lebanon, and the junior varsity team will host its reserve tournament on Saturday morning.

Next week Greenville has matches against St. Marys, Troy, Vandalia-Butler and Stebbins.

“We’ll see next week,” Kiser said. “We’ll have a couple tough matches next week, which is always good. We like to challenge them and see how they do.”
