Tri-Village baseball team tops Covington 10-8

COVINGTON – Tri-Village just squeaked by Covington for the 10-8 win in a rain-shortened game on Wednesday in Covington.

The teams actually started the seventh inning with Tri-Village scoring two runs in the top half of the inning to lead 12-8. Covington scored three in the bottom of the seventh to make it 12-11 and had two on with one out when the rain started pouring down. The game was called and reverted back to the last completed inning, giving Tri-Village the 10-8 win.

This game battled back and forth.

In the first inning it started out with Jonny Wilson and Christian Ricker both being walked from the very start. Wilson and Ricker then ran home, scoring the first two runs in the game.

In the bottom of the first the Patriots threw Covington out in 1-2-3.

However, Covington answered back in the second inning. Jared Williams got on base by a walk. Levi Winn then singled to left field. Mason Dilley then hit down the first baseline to load the bases.

Ricker then walked Tristian Sower, bringing Williams home for first score of the game for Covington. Noah Thomas came up next and was walked. James Grilliot followed Thomas and hit a RBI double, making the score 3-2 Covington.

In the top of third Tri-Village answered back. Tri-Village scored two runs this inning with Jordan Buckley getting one of the runs on an RBI. Covington also had its first error this inning when Christian Nelson missed the ball and then over threw to first base as the Patriots went up 4-3.

Covington scored Williams in the bottom, making it 4-4.

In the top of the fourth inning Tri-Village got Jorden Midlam and Wilson walked. Covington then switched pitchers to Nathan Blei.

Then Ricker came up hit it to center field, giving him two RBIs and putting him on first. Tanner Maples was walked next. Buckley came up and also scored Maples for a RBI to make the score 8-4 Tri-Village.

In the bottom of the fourth Covington scored four more. Blei got an RBI then scored himself that inning by Williams’s RBI. This made the game an 8-8 tie again.

In the top of the fifth Tri-Village scored Wilson and Ricker for what proved to be the winning runs. Ricker scored by coming home when Covington over threw the ball.

Ricker earned the win to improve to 1-1 on the season. He pitched four innings and allowed eight runs. Wilson pitched two scoreless innings in relief to earn the save, allowing one hit and no walks while striking out two.

Wilson was 1-for-1 at the plate with three walks, two stolen bases and three runs scored. Ricker went 2-for-3 with a triple, a RBI and three runs scored. Jared Buckley was 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Tri-Village had five hits and four errors in the game. Covington had four hits and four errors.

Tri-Village is now 2-4 overall and 2-0 in the Cross County Conference.
