Bradford baseball team defeats Newton 14-13

PLEASANT HILL – Bradford beat Newton 14-13 in a Cross County Conference baseball game on Friday.

Bradford scored two runs in the top half of the first inning, but Newton responded with six in the bottom half of the inning. In the second Bradford scored three and Newton scored one to make it 7-5 in favor of Newton.

After Newton extended its lead to 8-5 in the third, Bradford went ahead 9-8 with one run in the fourth and three in the fifth. After Newton tied the game at 9-9 in the bottom half of the fifth, Bradford scored five runs in the top of the sixth to lead 14-9. Newton scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to close the gap but lost by one.

Bradford had nine hits and four errors in the game, and Newton had 12 hits and three errors.

For Bradford Mason Justice was 2-for-5 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored. Walker Branson went 2-for-5 with a RBI and three runs scored. Andy Branson was 2-for-5 with a stolen base two RBIs. Bryson Canan went 2-for-4, stole a base and drove in a run.

Bryant Byers was 1-for-4 with a double, a walk, a stolen base and scored two runs. Parker Smith walked three times, stole two bases, drove in two runs and scored four runs. Dylan Casel walked twice and scored a run. Hunter Gheen and Clay Layman both walked once and scored a run. Chase Gambill also scored a run.

Smith earned the win as he pitched five innings, allowing six earned runs and seven unearned runs on 11 hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Andy Branson picked up the save as he pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and three walks while striking out one.

Bradford improved to 4-6 overall and 1-4 in the Cross County Conference.
