Versailles baseball team suffers its 1st loss of the season

VERSAILLES – The Versailles baseball team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, losing 8-1 to Turpin in the final game of the Zac Richard Classic.

After Turpin took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the second inning, Versailles went up 4-2 with two runs in the second and two in the third. The Cincinnati squad regained the lead with five runs in the fourth and one in the sixth to make it 7-4. Versailles forced extra innings with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Turpin came away with a one-run victory with a run in the 12th.

Turpin had 22 hits and no errors in Saturday’s game. Versailles had 13 hits and three errors.

Brett McEldowney led the Versailles offense as he went 5-for-6 with a double, a RBI and two runs scored. Austin Knapke was 2-for-5, was hit by a pitch and drove in four runs. Cole Niekamp was 2-for-5, walked once, drove in a run and scored two runs.

Kyle Subler went 2-for-5, walked once, stole a base and scored two runs. Kurtis Rutschilling was 1-for-4 with two walks and scored a run. Collin Peters was 1-for-4, walked once and drove in a run.

Peters was the losing pitcher for Versailles. He pitched two innings and allowed one earned run on four hits, one walk and one strikeout. Jacob Heitkamp pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed five earned runs and one unearned run on 11 hits, no walks and no strikeouts.

Adam Lyons pitched a scoreless inning, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out one. Keaton McEldowney pitched 3 2/3 innings and allowed one earned run on four this, no walks and one strikeout. Brett McEldowney pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out one.

Versailles fell to 8-1 on the season with the loss.
