GREENVILLE – The Greenville boys tennis team celebrated senior night on Tuesday with a 4-1 Greater Western Ohio Conference victory against Sidney.
“They haven’t played this well in a long time,” Greenville boys tennis coach Dennis Kiser said of his team’s play on Tuesday. “I mean sometimes you play down to your opponents, and last week there was a couple opponents that just weren’t very strong this year. And I thought we rose to the occasion tonight because Sidney is a pretty good team. We played well at all five spots so I’m really pleased with them and proud of them.”
In third singles Greenville senior Quintin Muhlenkamp improved to 13-6 on the season with a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Daichi Urata. Muhlenkamp finished 3-2 in GWOC North play this season.
In first doubles Greenville’s senior duo of Alex Lance and Tyler Davis beat Connor Armstrong and Michael Feree 6-1, 6-2 to improve to 11-4 as a pair this season. The Green Wave duo finished 4-1 in the GWOC North.
“It’s nice that they all played well,” Kiser said of his three seniors. “They were the first ones off the court. I was really pleased with them and how they played.”
In first singles the Green Wave’s Noah Haupt improved to 9-10 on the year with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Zac Darden. Haupt went 3-2 in the GWOC North this season.
In second singles the Wave’s Craig Manges improved to 14-5 as he beat Dylan Vonderhuevel 7-5, 6-1. Manges finished 3-2 in GWOC North play.
Greenville’s lone loss of the match came at second doubles where Sidney’s Derek Brady and Logan Searcy beat Austin Grote and Josh Smith 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (13). Grote and Smith are 10-4 together this season, including a 3-2 mark in GWOC North matches.
Greenville improved to 11-5 overall and 3-2 in the GWOC North with Tuesday’s win, finishing third in the division behind 5-0 Troy and 4-1 Vandalia-Butler. Sidney fell to 6-9 overall and 2-3 in the GWOC North.
“It’s always nice to finish up there high in the GWOC,” Kiser said.
Greenville’s junior varsity team beat Sidney won 5-0. Singles winners were Max Onkst, Bryan Day and Pablo Badell while doubles winners were the teams of Zach Miller and Aaron Lobenstein and Ryan Clefford and Jayce Lovett.
