Greenville softball team splits a doubleheader with Middletown Madison

GREENVILLE – The Greenville softball team split a doubleheader with Middletown Madison on Saturday, recovering from an 11-5 loss in game one to win 9-8 in game two in extra innings.

Madison started the doubleheader with a run in the top half of the first inning of game one. After Greenville scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning to lead 2-1, Madison scored four in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth to go up 8-2. Greenville scored two in the bottom of the fourth, and then in the fifth Madison scored three and Greenville scored one.

Greenville had five hits and four errors in game one while Madison had 10 hits and two errors.

Karsyn Shaffer led Greenville by going 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, a run and two RBIs. Cassie Cromwell was 1-for-4 with a double, a run and two RBIs. Lani Shilt went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run.

Sydney Grote was 1-for-3 and scored a run. Jazzlyn Petry walked and scored a run. Makayla Hanes drove in a run.

Grote pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing six earned runs and four unearned runs on eight hits, seven walks and two strikeouts. Alli Hill pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed one unearned run on two hits, no walks and no strikeouts.

After losing game one, Greenville mounted a comeback victory to win game two in extra innings.

Greenville scored first with a run in the first inning, but Madison scored eight runs in the third to lead 8-1. Greenville chipped away at its deficit with one run in the fourth and one in the fifth before tying the game at 8-8 in the sixth. The Lady Wave then scored the game-winning run in the ninth.

Greenville had 10 hits and two errors in the game while Madison had 11 hits and two errors.

Petry went 2-for-5 with three RBIs in game two. Hill was 2-for-4 with a walk, a RBI and two runs. Cromwell went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, a run and a RBI. Logan Tabler was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run.

Shaffer went 1-for-5 with a double, was hit by a pitch, drove in a run and scored a run. Grote was 1-for-3 and walked twice. Hanes walked three times and scored twice. Ashton Kester drove in two runs. Alexis Byers scored two runs.

Grote pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits, three walks and two strikeouts. Hill pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed four earned runs on four hits, two walks, one hit batter and no strikeouts.

Saturday’s split moved Greenville’s record to 18-6 on the season.
