The youngest owner of the USAC competition was at the races this weekend, Sam McGee. McGee is 16 years old and owns the No. 17 of Max McGee, who is only 18 and Sam’s older brother.

As of this past weekend they have raced in seven races this season already. Sam McGee has been an owner for two years now. So far their record is three quick times and two track records.

He has a great set up and a driver that has a lot of confidence behind him. He was looking to finish in the top five this weekend for both Friday and Saturday night.

McGee owns four cars total. The team brings two cars to the semi-local tracks and leaves two cars at the garage. Now when the team goes to Pennsylvania they will take three cars with them and that is an all-week event.

“You can get into the second car, but the primary car must be unfit before going to the second car,” Sam McGee said. “An unfit car is a frame is bent or etc.

“A car owner will get to the race track the day of the race unless it is far away then they leave three days early. They get situated and then get ready for the race. If they are a little distance from their house they get a hotel overnight or else if local they go home that day still.

“This team has been family operated for five years. Max started racing when he was 5 years old. He raced sprint in 2013 and this is the first year going for the championship.

“One race Max started 12th on lap seven he was running second he hit a hole in the wall and went flying. When the medic got there to check on him he was knocked out and came with it a little bit later, but it was a very scary experience seeing the car you own plus your brother go flipping through the air like that.

“I started working for another team and did not like where that team was headed. I started talking to my dad about becoming an owner of Max’s car. I told my dad that I would do it as long as everything was set up to go my way. My dad agreed and here we are today.”

The next event for Eldora is family night with $8 admission on May 21. After the races Eldora will have fireworks, which officials said will be better than any other time they had fireworks.
