Versailles baseball team defeats No. 2 ranked Springboro

VERSAILLES – Versailles beat Springboro, who is ranked No. 2 in Division I by the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association, 2-1 in a regular season game on Monday.

Springfield scored first with a run in the top of the third, but Versailles scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh when Kurtis Rutschilling drove in Kyle Subler with a sacrifice fly and Cole Niekamp drove in Keaton McEldowney with a game-winning single.

Versailles out-hit Springboro eight to six in the game, which was a tune up for Wednesday’s sectional tournament game against Arcanum. Neither team committed an error.

Keaton McEldowney went 2-for-3 and scored a run. Subler was 2-for-4 and scored a run. Rutschilling was 1-for-2 with a walk and a RBI. Niekamp was 1-for-4 with a RBI. Collin Peters was 1-for-1. Brett McEldowney was 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base.

Jacob Heitkamp pitched four innings, allowing one run on five hits, two walks and one strikeout. Peters, Keaton McEldowney and Brett McEldowney each pitched a scoreless inning. Peters allowed no hits and one walk, Keaton McEldowney allowed one hit and no walks, and Brett McEldowney allowed no hits or walks while striking out one.

Versailles improved to 18-4 with the win.
