ARCANUM – New varsity coach Macey O’Dell hosted a series of three-day volleyball camps for Arcanum’s high school, junior high and youth girls.
O’Dell, who previously was the junior varsity volleyball coach for the Trojans, replaces Terri Day as the Arcanum varsity volleyball coach. She had 20 girls attend her high school camp, 22 girls attend the junior high camp and 28 girls in the fourth through sixth grades attend the youth camp.
During the youth camp, the Arcanum coaches and high school volleyball players instructed the young girls about all the fundamentals of the sport.
“All the fundamentals – passing, setting, hitting – what it takes to be a volleyball player,” O’Dell said.
At the beginning of camp the elementary school girls showed their inexperience, but they made a lot of progress after getting instruction.
“The first day it was a little chaos, but today they’ve gotten to where they know how to do things,” O’Dell said. “Some of them had never touched a volleyball in their life.”
To teach the girls about the sport the high school players led a lot of drills and some games, including several relays that made the girls work as teams.
The high schoolers did a great job of showing leadership and taking charge, O’Dell said.
“My group of girls is very good this year,” she said. “They’ve done well.”
By the end of camp, O’Dell simply hoped the elementary school girls gained a love for the sport of volleyball.
“I hope they learn to love volleyball,” she said. “I hope they all eventually want to play the sport.”
