ARCANUM – Tuesday morning the Arcanum Trojans took another step forward to opening the 2016 football season by overcoming the heat of the day and faced off against the New Bremen Cardinals in a pre-season scrimmage.

The coaches and training steps took many precautions to ensure the safety of the players due to the heat. Players were consistently being reminded to drink fluids and several water time outs were taken during the morning.

Trojans coach TJ Powers was well satisfied with the effort of his team.

“The biggest thing I was pleased with was the effort,” he said. “We played hard from the opening whistle. I thought we got fatigued at the end and made some mistakes … We were getting after it on both sides of the ball.”

Coaches realize that players are going to make mistakes at this time of the season. Coach Powers told his team to “be aggressive doing it.” Physical errors are going to happen but the mental ones are the ones coaches try to correct and correct quickly.

“We’ve got to clean up some of the mental errors that we made,” Powers said. “Offense made mental errors that hurt us but are correctable and coachable … We’ve got to clean up some mental errors defensively. We’ve got to take better angles. Hey, it’s our seventh day of practice. We’ve got to keep getting better.”

Scrimmage highlights offensively for Arcanum came on two series. A long run by Daniel Coats down to inside the 10 yard line set up a Pierce Lindemuth to Wade Meeks touchdown pass in the right corner of the end zone. Later, another long connection between Lindemuth and Meeks netted the Trojans another six points.
