COLUMBUS (AP) — Huber Heights Wayne has been trying for two seasons to knock down the door that separates it from a coveted first Division I title, but each time Lakewood St. Edward stood in the way.
After four games it appears Wayne (3-0-1) team might be better than ever, and the Warriors are doing it with sophomore quarterback Rashad McKee.
Not counting his statistics in the season-opening 21-21 tie with Pennsylvania’s Archbishop Wood that was called with 9:21 left in the second quarter due to lightning, McKee in the past three games is 36 of 53 for 636 passing yards and eight touchdowns with no interceptions.
The Warriors, fourth in this week’s Associated Press Division I poll, beat Miamisburg 45-12 last week. They defeated Cincinnati Moeller 35-17 in week two and West Chester Lakota West 51-7 the following game.
Meanwhile, two-time defending champion St. Edward got knocked out of the No. 1 spot by Cincinnati Elder, 15-9, in the 10th consecutive meeting between the schools. Elder (3-1) tied the current series at five wins apiece by snapping the Eagles’ 14-game winning streak that started with a victory against the Panthers a year ago.
St. Edward (3-1) is fifth in the poll but is still three spots ahead of Elder, whose loss was to No.2 Pickerington Central, 20-14, in the first game. Cincinnati Colerain is top ranked.
When Logan lost a fumble with 1:21 left in the third quarter at Cambridge, the turnover ended a notable streak of 554 plays from scrimmage — a number that’s near 600 when kickoff and punt returns and placekicks are included — of not having given a fumble away, going back to week three last season against Pomeroy Meigs. That’s the equivalent of 11 games.
Shaker Heights was down 10 to Strongsville with six minutes left but rallied to win 30-26 on quarterback Jamir Dismukes’ 13-yard run with 48 seconds left. . Springfield defeated Centerville 26-20 when Danny Davis caught a 38-yard touchdown pass from Leonard Taylor on the last play of the game. . Lebanon beat Beavercreek 27-21 as Dakota Allen hit Jordan Campbell for a 35-yard TD with 12 seconds remaining. . Lima Shawnee quarterback Ray Manley connected with Jalen Bagley on a slant pass and Bagley pushed his way across the goal line as time expired for a 28-26 win vs. Van Wert.
Holland Springfield running back Bryant Koback ran for six touchdowns as the Blue Devils, No. 7 in Division II, ended Perrysburg’s 23-game Northern Lakes League winning streak with a 48-17 victory. . Coldwater scored 23 unanswered points for a 30-12 win over Fort Recovery in a battle of unbeaten defending state champions. Coldwater won the Division V title and is top-ranked in the division this season. Fort Recovery, seventh in the Division VII poll, was without Toledo-bound quarterback Caleb Martin, who had his appendix taken out earlier in the week. . Nelsonville-York defeated Bidwell River Valley 46-6 to become the first team in the Tri-Valley Conference to win 200 league games. Nelsonville-York is 200-61-3 since joining the league in 1970 and has won the most titles (20). . Wickliffe is 4-0 for the first time since 1998 after a 47-20 victory over Chagrin Falls, its first win in the series since 1999. . Wooster’s 4-0 start is its best in 30 years. . Hebron Lakewood (4-0) already has doubled its win output in any season since 2001. The Lancers went 16-123 from 2002-15. … Columbus Franklin Heights (4-0) is on target for its first winning season since 2001. The Falcons won only six games in the previous six seasons. . Avon beat Grafton Midview to end Midview’s 25-game regular-season win streak. It was also Midview’s first-ever Southwestern Conference loss.
Amherst Steele snapped a 14-game losing streak with a 54-13 win vs. Berea-Midpark on Friday. The game was played a day after Ohio state trooper Kenneth Velez was killed after being struck by a vehicle on I-90. His son, Christian, is a sophomore linebacker and captain for Amherst. Supporters from both schools wore blue in honor of the fallen trooper.
Delaware Buckeye Valley senior Chris Santillan scored via a 49-yard punt return, an 8-yard pass and a 90-yard kickoff return in a 56-3 win over Galion. . Mount Gilead’s Jonah Barnett, who ran for nine TDs earlier this season vs. Crooksville, rushed for 347 yards and five touchdowns in a 35-34 loss to Cardington. . Hamler Patrick Henry senior Tre Zimmer had 15 tackles, including 14 solos, in the Patriots’ 22-14 win over previously unbeaten Liberty Center. . Medina senior tailback Jimmy Daw had six touchdowns in a 52-14 win vs. Elyria. He has 17 TDs in four games.
Maria Stein Marion Local head coach Tim Goodwin earned his 200th career win as the Flyers beat Minster 44-6. Goodwin is 200-43 since starting his head coaching career at Marion Local in 1999. .. With Jackson’s 52-27 victory over Mt. Orab Western Brown, Andy Hall tied Jim Reynolds for the most coaching victories at Jackson with 63. Reynolds was the radio analyst for the game. Hall can break the record Friday when the Ironmen are at Hall’s alma mater, Wheelersburg, which is ranked No. 2 in Division V.
