ARCANUM – The Arcanum Lady Trojans’ play at the net and defensive effort were too much for Dixie, as Arcanum defeated the Lady Greyhounds in straight sets of volleyball action Monday evening, 25-14,25-12 and 25-14.
Arcanum’s initial assault in set one was an impressive one. The Lady Trojans ran numerous quick middle sets that resulted in kills for a seven-point run to make the score 12-2 and cause a Dixie timeout. The Lady Greyhounds would recover to even up with Arcanum for the remainder of the set but would run out of time to catch up as the Lady Trojans took the first stanza 25-14.
“We try to run it as much as we can … pass has to be on the net,” Arcanum coach Macey O’Dell said of the quick sets. “We practice it all the time. We try to run it as much as we can … We try to run a quick offense as much as we can.”
Set two was a more competitive game. The set was tied at 6, 7 and 8 before Arcanum wrestled away control of the play. The Lady Trojans once again began to dominate at the net either on Dixie offensive efforts or kill attempts of their own. The defense simply covered the floor, not allowing the ball to find the floor. An even set turned quickly into an Arcanum 25-12 win.
“Nothing hits the floor is my biggest thing,” Coach O’Dell said. “We try to play great defense … sometimes a switch clicks and on we come.”
Dixie channeled its frustration into an opening 7-1 lead in set three, forcing an Arcanum timeout. The Lady Trojans used the verbal inspiration to tie the score at 8. Including that rally Arcanum outscored Dixie 23-7 the remainder of the set to take the match by winning 25-14.
“We picked it up and played to our ability and got the job done,” Coach O’Dell said of the third set comeback.
“We’re on a very good streak right now,” Coach O’Dell said. “Hopefully it continues this week and into the tournament Saturday.”
