DARKE COUNTY – A pair of senior captains who have been key to their teams’ success this year are this week’s Daily Advocate athletes of the week.

This week’s Daily Advocate athletes of the week are Arcanum volleyball player Shai Robinson and Greenville boys soccer player AJ Frens.

Robinson set Arcanum’s single season digs record this year. She currently has 349 digs, which is second best behind Tri-Village’s Kara Hollinger among all Darke County players.

The Arcanum senior also leads her team and is second in Darke County with 228 kills, second only to Ansonia’s Lydia Sink in the county.

“Shai is one of our captains and our floor leader,” Arcanum volleyball coach Macey O’Dell said. “She is an all-around great player.”

Robinson has helped guide the Trojans to an 18-4 overall record and 11-2 Cross County Conference mark. She has been instrumental in the team’s success as one of the Trojans’ best players and one of their top leaders.

“I have enjoyed coaching her and helping her be able to further her volleyball career into college,” O’Dell said. “Not only is Shai an exceptional volleyball player, but she is a role model and a great example of a student-athlete.”

Frens has helped lead the Green Wave to a 7-5-3 overall record and 5-3-2 Greater Western Ohio Conference record, which has the Wave in line for their first winning season since joining the GWOC in 2010.

“He’s been huge – all of our seniors have,” Greenville coach Mark Coppess said of Frens’ effect on the team. “He’s been the one who kind of takes control.”

As Greenville’s goalkeeper, Frens led the GWOC in saves as both a sophomore and junior after finishing second in the conference as a freshman. Now as a senior he’s 16th in the league as Greenville has limited the number of shots against him.

“He’s done real well this season,” Coppess said. “Obviously his shots on goal are way down from the past, but his save percentage is still up above 70 percent.”

Frens has saved 75 percent of the shots against him this year, which is the second best of his career. He’s also posted four shutouts.

“He’s a very key player back there,” Coppess said, “kept us in a lot of games.”

As a senior captain Frens is a player the rest of his teammates look up to, Coppess said.

“AJ is a great leader back there,” the Green Wave coach said. “Keeps the defense in shape and organized. Commands his box pretty well and makes great saves.”
