Franklin Monroe girls soccer team ends season as sectional runner up to Waynesville

BELLBROOK – The Franklin Monroe girls soccer team’s season came to an end Tuesday as the Lady Jets lost 6-1 to Waynesville in the sectional finals of the Ohio High School Athletic Association tournament.

Franklin Monroe exceeded expectations to win its first two tournament games, Coach Scott Howell said, before running into an excellent Waynesville team that received votes in the Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association Division III state rankings.

“To be honest with you nobody gave us a chance to win one game (in the tournament) let alone be in the third game,” said Howell, whose team reached the sectional final for the first time since 2013. “I think the last two games have taken a lot out of us. We’ve played with a lot of heart, and it’s taken every ounce out, every bit of energy we’ve had to get through them.”

The Jets knew they had their hands full entering Tuesday’s sectional championship game.

The Spartans controlled the tempo for most of the game and took just 74 seconds to get their first goal from Marcella Sizer, and less than 10 minutes later Waynesville got a second goal from Megan Osterhage.

With 16:27 remaining in the half the Spartans got their third goal from Hailey Price, and less than five minutes after that Megan Handle made it a 4-0 game.

“That was a good team, very, very, very good team,” Howell said. “We knew that coming in.”

Just 66 seconds into the second half Anna Miller scored Waynesville’s fifth goal of the game.

Franklin Monroe was able to avoid the shutout as Christiana Singer scored with 23:50 remaining in the game.

“Singer got the goal in the scrum, her first goal of the year,” Howell said. “I think Bryanna (Diceanu) got the assist. Fantastic. A little bit of heart.”

The game’s final score came with just 27 seconds remaining as Miller knocked in her second goal of the night for the 6-1 Waynesville win.

With Tuesday’s loss Franklin Monroe, the sectional runner up, ended the season with a 10-6-3 record.

“It was a fantastic year,” Howell said.

The loss also marked the end of the high school soccer careers of Franklin Monroe’s six seniors: Nicole Berry, Bryanna Diceanu, Jessica Hinshaw, Beth Kirkpatrick, Allyson Masterson and Saige Morrie.

“Great class. All fix of them fantastic young ladies. Battled their tails off for four years,” Howell said. “Those six kids just come every day and play their hearts out. What more can you ask? I’d take six more of them just like those six four years ago to come out and start over again. It was fun. Great kids. Had a fun year. Had a ball with these guys.”
