Versailles wrestling team defeats Greenville, Troy

VERSAILLES – The Versailles wrestling team beat Greenville and Troy on Tuesday, winning 26 of the 28 total matches against its two opponents.

Versailles won all 14 matches against Greenville with a final score of 77-0 and beat Troy in 12 of the 14 matches for a final score of 58-7. Troy beat Greenville 37-24 in the night’s other match.

“I thought we wrestled with some aggressiveness, looked pretty decent on our feet,” Versailles coach AJ Bey said. “We’ve still got little things to work on, but I thought we wrestled pretty well.”

The evening began with Versailles defeating Troy.

Versailles’ Isaac Grilliot started off the Tigers with a win by pinning Will Brumfield with 35.2 left in the first period of the 220 pound match.

Versailles got its second consecutive pin with Jeffrey Ware pinning Myers Slebo with a minute left in the second period of the 285 pound match, increasing the Tiger lead to 12-0.

Versailles’ Cael Bey beat Brandon Lewis 7-2 in the 106 pound match then Nick Monnier beat Mitchell Francis 4-0 in the 113 pound match to make it 18-0.

Troy’s first win came at the 120 pound match where Joseph Pascale beat Versailles’ Jacob Poling in a 13-2 major decision.

Versailles’ Preston Platfoot in the 126 pound match and Steven Mangen in the 132 pound match both won by forfeit, increasing the Tiger lead to 30-4.

In the closest bout of the match Versailles’ Kyle Wuebker beat Carlos Quintero 6-5 in the 138 pound match.

Versailles’ Tanner Bey then pinned David McGraw with 1:31 left in the second period of the 145 pound match, putting the Tigers up 39-4 and securing the team victory.

Versailles’ Derek Cavin beat Justin Mittelstadt 10-4 in the 152 pound match and Tyler Gigandet beat Ryan Dever in a 10-1 major decision in the 160 pound match.

Jonny Moorman pinned Dakota Hamman with 4.4 seconds left in the first period of the 170 pound match, giving Versailles a 52-4 lead.

Troy’s second win came in the 182 pound match where Davin Snyder beat Versailles’ Bo Bey 13-7.

Versailles’ Jacob Rismiller then pinned Isaac Brown with 16.8 seconds left in the first period of the 195 pound match to give Versailles the 58-7 victory.

“They practice hard in the practice room,” Coach Bey said of his team. “You know we’re going to go out and wrestle whoever is in front of us and put our best foot forward and go from there.”

In the second match of the evening Greenville took on Troy.

Troy took a 6-0 lead as Myers Slebo pinned Greenville’s Blaine Hawkey with 1:21 left in the first period of the 285 pound match.

Troy increased its lead to 10-0 in the 106 pound match with Brandon Lewis beating Greenville’s Andrew Stachler in a 16-3 major decision.

Troy’s Mitchell Francis won the 113 pound match by forfeit to put Troy up 16-0.

Troy’s Joseph Pascale beat Austin Lacey in a 15-4 major decision in the 120 pound match. He lost a point though to a penalty, putting Troy up 19-0.

Greenville’s Dean Hurd got the Green Wave on the scoreboard when he won the 126 pound match by forfeit, making it 19-6.

After a double forfeit in the 132 pound match, Greenville’s Jacob Mikesell beat Carlos Quintero 12-7 in the 138 pound match to further reduce the Wave’s deficit to 19-9.

Troy’s Justin Mittelstadt won the 145 pound match by forfeit.

Greenville’s Jeremy Eshbaugh beat Ryan Dever 6-3 in the 152 pound match.

Then after a double forfeit in the 160 pound match, the Wave’s Christian Chalmers pinned Dakota Hamman with 1:22 remaining in the second round of the 170 pound match to reduce the Trojans’ lead to 25-18.

Troy pulled away again when Davin Snyder pinned Greenville’s Zane Mancillas with 1:18 left in the first period of the 182 pound match and Will Brumfield pinned Greenville’s Caden Gonzalez with 32.2 seconds remaining in the first period of the 195 pound match, giving Troy a 37-18 lead.

Greenville’s Landin Brown won the 220 pound match by forfeit, making the final score 37-24.

“Troy, we’re pretty comparable with them I would think,” Greenville coach David Guillozet said. “They have a little more experience up at the heavier weights.”

In the evening’s final match Versailles swept Greenville.

Cael Bey started off the match for Versailles by pinning Andrew Stachler with 17.6 seconds left in the first period of the 106 pound match.

Versailles’ Nick Monnier then won the 113 pound match by forfeit to put the Tigers up 12-0.

In the 120 pound match Versailles’ Jacob Poling beat Austin Lacey by a 16-1 technical fall.

Versailles’ Preston Platfoot then pinned Dean Hurd with 1:50 left in the second period of the 126 pound match, giving the Tigers a 23-0 lead.

After Versailles’ Steven Mangen won the 132 pound match by forfeit, Kyle Wuebker beat Greenville’s Jacob Mikesell 7-0 in the 138 pound match to make it 32-0.

Versailles’ Lane Feltz won the 145 pound match by forfeit then Tanner Bey beat Jeremy Eshbaugh 9-2 in the 152 pound match.

Following Tyler Gigandet’s win by forfeit in the 160 pound match, Versailles’ Jonny Moorman pinned Christian Chalmers with 43 seconds remaining in the second period of the 170 pound match to make it 53-0.

Versailles’ Boy Bey pinned Zane Mancillas with four seconds remaining in the second period of the 182 pound match and Jacob Rismiller pinned Greenville’s Caden Gonzalez one minute into the 195 pound match.

Versailles’ Isaac Grilliot pinned Landin Brown with 32.5 seconds remaining in the first period of the 220 pound match and Jeffrey Ware pinned Greenville’s Blaine Hawkey 19 seconds into the first period of the 285 pound match to complete the Tigers’ 77-0 win.

“Overall not very good,” Guillozet said of Greenville’s performance. “Versailles is a tough team. Troy has a pretty decent program there. We could have done a little better but you know it is what it is. We’ll move on, we’ll work harder, and we’ll try to improve.”
