VERSAILLES – Versailles began the Ohio High School Athletic Association wrestling dual team tournament with a 67-6 regional tournament victory against Bluffton on Wednesday.

Versailles, the regional quarterfinal host, faced Bluffton after the Pirates beat Parkway 43-30 in the opening round Wednesday night. Following their first-round bye the Tigers easily beat the Pirates to advance to next week’s regional semifinals.

“A couple pretty close matches I thought we could have won but the kids came out and wrestled well,” Versailles coach A.J. Bey said. “Looking forward to next week. I’m sure we’re probably going to wrestle Coldwater and then Mechanicsburg. I haven’t seen any results yet up there, but I think the kids are really looking forward to going up there and seeing if we can contend for the regional title.”

Bluffton spotted Versailles a 12-0 lead as the Pirates forfeited the first two matches with Cael Bey winning at 106 and Nick Monnier winning at 113.

In Versailles’ first action of the night Jacob Poling pinned Bluffton’s Ryder Romick with 31.1 seconds remaining in the first period to put the Tigers up 18-0.

Versailles’ Preston Platfoot in the 126 pound match and Steven Mangen in the 132 pound match both won by forfeit, increasing the Tiger lead to 30-0.

Bluffton’s first win of the night came in the 138 pound match when James Badial-Luna beat Versailles’ Kyle Wuebker 10-6, making the score 30-3.

Versailles added to its lead with Lane Feltz winning the 145 pound match by forfeit.

Tanner Bey then pinned Nathanial Staley with 45.7 seconds remaining in the first period of the 152 pound match, putting the Tigers up 42-3 and securing the victory.

Tyler Gigandet beat Austin Mault 2-1 in the 160 pound match to increase Versailles’ advantage to 45-3.

Versailles’ Jonathan Moorman beat Andrew Burroughs by a 24-8 technical fall in the 170 pound match and Bo Bey beat Landen Luginbuhl by a 17-2 technical fall in the 182 pound match, putting Versailles ahead 55-3.

Bluffton’s second and final victory of the match came in the 195 pound bout when Deandre Nasser beat Versailles’ Jacob Rismiller 3-1, making the score 55-6.

Versailles’ Isaac Grilliot led 7-0 in the 220 pound match when Bluffton’s Brett Basinger withdrew with an injury. Then Versailles’ Jeffrey Ware won the 285 pound match by forfeit for the 67-6 final score.

“We’re a pretty good dual team, and we had two dual meet tournaments canceled this year so we haven’t wrestled any dual meet tournaments so getting this started and getting into some duals, the kids really enjoy the duals,” Coach Bey said of beginning the dual team tournament.

Versailles now advances to face Coldwater in the regional semifinals on Feb. 1 in a to-be-determined location. The winner of that match will face the winner of the other Region 24 regional semifinal between Mechanicsburg and Miami East for a spot at the state tournament.

“I think we’re far enough in the season and our schedule is a pretty good schedule so I think the kids are mentally and physically ready to take that challenge to get two big wins,” Coach Bey said.
