Tri-Village girls basketball team defeats Jefferson 102-24 in OHSAA tournament

BROOKVILLE – It has become an annual opening first round game between Tri-Village and Jefferson in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Brookville Division IV sectional girls basketball tournament.

Tri-Village jumped out to a 17-0 lead in this year’s edition on Saturday before Jefferson got on the scoreboard on the only triple and score of the game for Aliah Barker.

Only three players would score in the game for Jefferson, but it was the play of the Bronco senior point guard that would impress many as she put on her own show to help Jefferson to 15 first quarter points by scoring 12 of her own.

But the Patriots blitzed Jefferson with a lot of layups to score 34 first quarter points led by senior Danika Mann with 16 points and freshman Lisa Porter with 8 to lead 34-15.

In the second quarter the Patriots clamped down on Jefferson defensively, holding the Broncos to just 5 points while adding 29 of their own behind Emma Printz with 9 and Allie Downing 8 points to lead the way. T-V held a 63-20 halftime lead.

Defensively Tri-Village would only surrender 4 points in the second half as the Patriots worked on a variety of defenses to prepare for future teams.

Offensively the Patriots scored 39 second half points including the final 4 points from freshman Maddie Downing that put the Patriots over the 100-point mark, winning the game 102-24.

The Patriots were led by Mann with 30 points, Allie Downing 16, Porter 14, and Printz added 13 in the win.

“It’s always good to get that first tournament win, especially when you can get all your kids into the game,” Tri-Village coach Brad Gray said.

“I wasn’t happy with our defense in the first quarter, giving up 15 points, but after that we locked it down and gave up just 9 more points the rest of the way,” Gray said.

“Everyone played well today, especially on defense (minus the first quarter), which leads to our transition game, and when we can get out a run we are good basketball team,” Gray said.

“Danika Mann benefited today from that. She runs the floor really hard for us, and many of her points came in the open floor, and that’s a result of her hard work,” Gray added.

“We will get back at it on Monday and start preparing for Catholic Central on Thursday,” Gray concluded.

Tri-Village will move on to the second round at Brookville and will play Springfield Catholic Central at 6 p.m. Thursday.
