Mississinawa Valley baseball team loses CCC opener to Covington

UNION CITY – The Mississinawa Valley baseball team lost its Cross County Conference opener 10-3 to Covington on Wednesday.

Covington took a 3-0 lead in the top half of the first inning. Mississinawa Valley responded with one run in the first inning and one in the fourth to cut its deficit to 3-2. Covington then scored seven runs in the fifth inning and MV scored one in the sixth for the 10-3 final score.

Mississinawa Valley had eight hits and three errors in the game. Covington had five hits and two errors.

Mississinawa Valley’s Andrew Johns was 2-for-3 with a RBI and a stolen base. Cameron Shimp was 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run. Trent Collins was 2-for-4 and scored a run. Zac Longfellow went 2-for-3 and stole a base. Ethan Dirksen stole a base and scored a run.

Matthew Slob pitched 4 1/3 innings for MV, allowing four earned runs and four unearned runs on three hits, five walks and five strikeouts. Kyler Guillozet pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed two unearned runs on two hits, one walk and two strikeouts. Ethan Dirksen pitched an inning, allowing no runs, no hits, no walks and three strikeouts.

Mississinawa Valley fell to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the CCC with the loss.
