Greenville boys tennis team defeats Eaton in home finale

GREENVILLE – Greenville won its final home match of the season on Friday with a 3-2 victory against Eaton and then honored Coach Dennis Kiser for being selected to the Miami Valley Tennis Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

With Friday’s win the Greenville boys tennis team improved to 15-4 on the season while Eaton fell to 9-5.

“Oh, boy,” Kiser said. “That was a tough one, and I knew it would be coming down here. That second doubles pulled it out for us. Losing 6-1 the first set, I thought, well, that’s going to be a tough one. And they really came back and played well.”

In second doubles Greenville’s Aaron Lobenstein and Josh Galloway beat John Altom and Matther Weight 1-6, 6-3, 6-0.

Greenville’s Noah Haupt won the first singles match 6-3, 6-1 over Eaton’s Breven Perry. The Green Wave’s Craig Manges beat Brad Kramer 6-3, 6-4 in second singles.

Branson Leigeber from Greenville lost 6-1, 6-0 to Cody Frizzell in third singles.

In first doubles the Wave’s Austin Grote and Josh Smith lost 7-6, 6-4 to Andrew Collins and Dylan Hauser.

“I just saw a lot of tired legs out there tonight,” Kiser said. “We’ve played, I think, 10 matches the last 13 days. And I knew Eaton was going to be good … I’ve been following their scores, and they’ve lost to four really good teams. So I knew this was going to be tough, and just to pull it out 3-2, we will take it; that’s for sure.”

Friday’s match was the final home match for Greenville’s four seniors: Grote, Haupt, Manges and Smith.

“Kind of like your kids,” Kiser said. “You kind of get used to being around them in the wintertime when they come to open tennis and then spending all this time with them like 10, 11 weeks here. They’re kind of like your own. I know more will come to replace them, but this group has been a special group, just like they all are, but this one has been special as well. I’m going to miss.”

Following the match, Greenville honored Kiser for being selected to the Miami Valley Tennis Coaches Association Hall of Fame. In his 27 seasons leading the Green Wave boys tennis program, Kiser has a career record of 314-167.

“It’s obviously a great honor,” Kiser said. “Sometimes I just don’t feel … I don’t have a tennis background so I’m still a little leery. I still don’t think tennis is my sport to coach with the football and basketball background. But I love the game. I’ve learned a lot, obviously. I go to clinics and everything. It’s a great honor, and it’s kind of unbelievable actually.”
