VERSAILLES – The Versailles Youth Baseball Association concluded the Craig Stammen Classic on Sunday, which included 45 youth baseball teams from throughout western Ohio.
The tournament included six age division – 8U, 9U, 10U, 11U, 12U and 14U – and featured teams from Anna, Coldwater, Fort Loramie, Indian Lake, Liberty-Benton, Lima Shawnee, Marion Local, Minster, Russia, St. Henry, Troy and Versailles. There were six to eight teams in each division.
“The weekend went great,” Bernie Knapke of the Versailles Youth Baseball Association said. “The weather was beautiful. The concessions did great. The kids had fun. We had a great weekend. Very tickled with the outcome”
The tournament has been contested for more than 10 years but was renamed the Craig Stammen Classic in 2015 for Versailles alumnus Craig Stammen, a Major League Baseball player who currently is pitching for the San Diego Padres.
The four-day tournament began on June 16 and concluded Sunday afternoon. There were games at Heritage Park, Ward Park, Indian Creek, the Versailles High School softball diamond, the Versailles High School baseball diamond in Versailles plus North Star Park in North Star – Stammen’s hometown.
The hometown team won one championship as Versailles beat Minster for the 11U championship.
The Buzzards from Coldwater won the 8U championship, defeating Versailles 8U in the championship game.
Coldwater won the 9U championship with Troy finishing as the runner-up.
Coldwater won the 10U championship, and Russia finished as the runner-up.
Coldwater also won the 12U championship, defeating Russia in the final.
Troy won the 14U championship with the Fort Loramie 14U finishing as the runner-up.
