Mississinawa Valley football team loses to crosstown rival Union City

UNION CITY, Ind. – The Mississinawa Valley football team lost 28-20 to crosstown rival Union City in the Blackhawks’ season opener on Friday night.

Mississinawa Valley started the night on a high note, taking a 6-0 lead in the first quarter. Union City scored twice in the second quarter to take a 13-6 lead into the intermission.

Union City scored early in the third quarter to make it 20-6 then added a second touchdown in the third quarter to lead 28-6.

After giving up 28 consecutive points, Mississinawa Valley regrouped and scored in the third quarter to cut its deficit to 28-14. The Blackhawks added another touchdown in the fourth quarter to pull within one score but ultimately fell short by 8 points.

Trent Collins was 15-of-27 for 167 yards, one touchdown and one interception for MV.

Collins also led Mississinawa Valley on the ground, running 12 times for 60 yards and a touchdown. Nate Gladdish ran 11 times for 47 yards and a touchdown.

Gladdish caught five passes for 46 yards and a touchdown. Dilyn Rammel caught seven passes for 84 yards. Alex Scholl caught two passes for 32 yards, and Blake Scholl caught one pass for 5 yards.

Gladdish led Mississinawa Valley with 8.5 tackles on defense. Collins had six tackles including one for a loss. Billy Bridges had five tackles and two tackles for a loss.

Mississinawa Valley fell to 0-1 on the year with Friday’s loss while Union City improved to 1-1.

MV will play host to New Bremen on Friday in the Blackhawks’ home opener. The Cardinals are coming off a 48-0 win against Bradford.
