DARKE COUNTY – Two runners who finished second at the Cross County Conference cross country meet are this week’s Daily Advocate athletes of the week.

This week’s Daily Advocate athletes of the week are Bradford girls cross country runner Skipp Miller and Franklin Monroe boys cross country runner Cole Good.

Miller finished second at the CCC meet with a personal-best time of 19:42.9, only trailing teammate Karmen Knepp.

“I think her runner-up finish at the CCC meet was awesome,” Bradford cross country coach Rob Grillot said. “As a coach, I love seeing the first two runners who cross the finish line to be from Bradford. She set a new PR at that race with a 19:42. I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

This season Miller is the second-fastest girl in Darke County, trailing only Knepp. The Bradford freshman consistently has been one of the top finishers in all of her races and even won the Patriot Invitational at Tri-Village.

“Skipp has done a terrific job this season,” Grillot said. “For a freshman to move up into high school and push herself to finish in the top five or 10 at every race isn’t easy to do. She’s a consistent runner and is very head strong. She gives every race her best effort.”

Miller has excelled throughout the season because of her work ethic plus the motivation she receives from her teammates.

“Skipp has a great work ethic,” Grillot said. “She is focused and driven. She is highly competitive and works hard at everything she does. Aside from that, she has a wonderful team of runners who push each other at practice as well as meets. I enjoy seeing them work together and helping each other get better each week.”

Good finished second in the CCC boys race with a time of 16:43.9, which was a personal-best for him. He only finished behind Arcanum’s Tanner Delk at the conference meet.

“That’s a big run for him,” Franklin Monroe cross country coach Rick Ingold said. “Really a lot of congratulations go to Tanner Delk for what he’s done this year, but Cole ran a great race, beat Korry Hamlin from Bethel for I think the first time in his career.”

So far this season Good is the third-faster runner in Darke County behind Versailles’ Joe Spitzer and Delk. He’s improved from past years and become a more consistent runner, Ingold said.

“He’s definitely improved,” Ingold said. “He’s been a lot more consistent than he’s been in the past. We haven’t had the ups and downs.”

The Franklin Monroe junior has excelled because of his physical abilities and the mentality he possesses.

“He’s got the right build but probably more importantly he’s got the right attitude,” Ingold said. “When we get to conference and districts and regionals and eventually the state meet, he’s got an extra gear.”

Good is just starting to hit his stride, which Ingold said is a good sign for the upcoming Ohio High School Athletic Association postseason meets.

“I think he’s just starting to really get into shape in the last week or two, and I think that bodes pretty well for the next few weeks,” Ingold said.
