COLUMBUS – With just one week left in the regular season, the Ansonia football team is in position to qualify for the Ohio High School Athletic Association playoffs for the first time since 2010.
Ansonia currently is ranked seventh in the Division VII Region 28 computer rankings, which will be used to determine which football teams make the postseason following the conclusion of the regular season. Log on to the football page at OHSAA.org for an explanation of how the ratings are calculated.
The top eight teams in each region at the end of the regular season will qualify for the playoffs. In Region 28 Convoy Crestview, Lehman Catholic, Delphos St. John’s, Fort Loramie, Minster, Riverside, Ansonia and Lima Perry currently are in playoff position.
According to projections on www.joeeitel.com, which is unofficial but has been a reliable tracker of OHSAA computer points, six teams already have secured playoff spots in Region 28 – Crestview, Lehman, Delphos St. John’s, Fort Loramie, Minster and Riverside – leaving just two spots available.
Both Lima Perry and Miami Valley Christian could secure playoff spots with victories on Friday, which would leave Ansonia out of the playoffs. However, both teams face tough challenges as Perry has to play 7-2 Elgin while Miami Valley Christian has to play 6-2 Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy.
Websites that project high school football matchups, www.calpreps.com and www.fantastic50.net, expect Perry to win, but both sites have Miami Valley Christian as a huge underdog. Fantastic50 predicts Miami Valley Christian to lose by 36 points while Calpreps predicts the Lions to lose by 46 points.
Taking that into consideration, Fantastic50 projects that Ansonia has a 92 percent chance of making the playoffs. Most likely the Tigers would face a first-round game at Crestview. They also could have to face Lehman in the first round of the playoffs.
While Ansonia is in playoff position, the rest of Darke County’s high school football teams are not. Arcanum, Bradford, Greenville, Mississinawa Valley, Tri-Village and Versailles are not ranked in the top 12 of their regions. Thus they are out of playoff position and were not included in this week’s OHSAA computer ratings release.
According to Joe Eitel, Arcanum, Bradford, Greenville, Mississinawa Valley, Tri-Village and Versailles all have been eliminated from playoff contention. Thus, they will end their seasons on Friday.
